early morning in Cookham

In preparation for the ‘art therapy’ session on Sunday with Waitrose friends I thought it good to visit Cookham again and to look around Odney for the best spots to paint. The white bridge over the river tributary is very picturesque with Cookham Church in the distance and all the ducks and dogs chasing each other around. The view I like the most was a shaded spot so I could paint for an hour unaffected by the strong sun already climbing into the 30’s. the bridge was in dark shadow but within ten minutes spots of light emerged on the bridge and water and I felt as if I were in a Monet painting all of a sudden, absolutely stunning. I tried my upmost to do it justice however it was like painting a moving object as every minute the light changed but I felt lucky to have been fortunate enough to time my arrival, by chance, so well. within an hour it was too hot, the sun hammered down on me and the bridge was being burnt away by the sun. Time to leave. Great start to the day, still only 9.30am.

Chiswick River Banksy

I managed to work out how to get to the mall at the Chiswick riverside with some cunning navigation through Ealing and Acton. The spot by the Hammersmith bridge is brilliant to paint and to relax. Lots of pubs and a park and breathtaking views of the Thames. The tidal effect is really drastic here and the house boats end up ungracefully dumped on the muddy cluttery river bed which resembles pictures of the moon with boats on it. The sun was already high and heading up into the 30’s there was no time to dawdle so I settled for a view I’d seen done by other artists in books and went to work frantically getting things on the canvas before they changed from dark to light objects and before the river slowly shrank and the boats unceremoniously rocked on there keels and listed to there twice daily land based position. The sun fried my bare feet and a man asked me if I were banksy due to my banksy t shirt (clever guy). No time for cold beers in the Blue Anchor, I fudged an impression of boat caos, two hours later, squeezed all the gear into the bike box and joined the baking seething traffic on the M4 back to civilisation and our little bit of the dear old Thames in marlow;-)

Painting a Porsche and vintage scooters in marlow

Painting out in marlow today (18th July , Sunday). Talked to lots of people. The temperature was racing towards 30 degrees and ice creams were being devoured at alarming rates. My perculier parstime stopped caused quite a lot of interest. My time was evenly split between painting and and offered good customer service, such as giving directions and tips on painting with paddle sized pallet knives. Many onlookers were very interesting in there own right and seemed to be on varying random missions quite different in nature. One couple had ashes to sprinkle on the river Thames, an other had a Porsche he wanted to feature in my painting, starring role of course. I later discovered the owner made a living from painting cars, so perhaps he was putting me to the test. One chap was a baker at Burgers and a family I met were in the midst of walking the entire Thames during lock down, embarking on the marlow-Henley section that day, with kids and dogs in tow as happy as could be they marched off to the river for 9 miles of hot trekking:-) I finished my painting when the sun crept under my tree and began to gentle bake me. The Porsche got star billing, closely followed by 4 very well loved lambretta scooters, all of which hadn’t been counted on and which required painstaking attention to detail  for most of the morning. So I hope the painting sells to either the Porsche owner, the scooter owners or the vicar.

The reason we paint ?

Form is no other than emptiness; emptiness no other than form. Form is exactly emptiness; emptiness exactly form." The absolute is the relative, the relative is the absolute. Together, they make up reality.

Ricky Gervais

Today I met Ricky Gervais, one of my heroes. It was a wonderful moment. He was out for a stroll with his partner enjoying a beautiful sunny day in the park.

Ricky is keen on Art so I hope he will pop into my open studio on 2-3rd may during the marlow art trail.
